Check out the new marquee at the D&R Theater in Aberdeen, Washington:

It's a replication of one that graced the theater in 1936.

Here it is in the daytime from a few days ago. The workmen were still installing the neon tubing and connecting the wiring:

Beautiful indeed! Thanks for the pics Ken. I miss those marquees. If I ever open a theatre again it'll be with one of those. Merry Christmas from southern Oregon.

The D&R theater had sat neglected for 20 years until local businessman John Yonich bought the theater back in May. He hated to see what a sad state of disrepair it had fallen into. I think he's spent a million bucks on the building renovations so far.

I'm surprised they let him use that LED letter boarding. Its not historically correct and the way it is done here poses a potential traffic hazard since it will have to scroll (having what appears to be only one line).

I was approved for use of LED lettering but with the restriction that 1.) it could not be RED. 2.) The messages had to appear in their entirety (no scrolling, no animations). 3.) Each message had to appear for a minimum of 30 seconds before changing)

I have no money to complete such a project but felt the restrictions were reasonable and was surprised at the support for the technology given the historical aspects of this technology.

Very nice. Too bad they won't be showing movies though.

Ken, what was the reasoning behind using neon instead of LED tube lighting? I'm sure that was considered. They can look virtually identical, yet LED's cost a fraction to power and never burn out.
