Marcus Theatres said Friday morning that it will not carry the new movie starring Johnny Depp, "Sweeney Todd," because the chain "was not able to reach an agreement with Paramount Pictures on the film cost."

"Sweeney Todd" is scheduled to be released Dec. 21.

"Unfortunately, as a result of the negotiations with Paramount reaching an impasse, Marcus Theatres will not be showing Sweeney Todd at any of its locations," said Bruce Olson, president of Marcus Theatres. "This decision was reluctantly reached because the price requested by Paramount to show the film in Marcus Theatres was too expensive in the opinion of our film buyers."

Olson said Marcus must be able to control its costs "so that we can continue to provide the best entertainment value for our guests."

A spokesman for Paramount Pictures Corp. in Los Angeles could not immediately be reached for comment.

"Sweeney Todd" was nominated for multiple Golden Globe awards on Thursday. Depp was nominated for best actor in a musical or comedy, Tim Burton for best director and "Sweeney Todd" for best picture.

The movie is an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's musical thriller. It also stars Helena Bonham Carter.

Marcus Theatres is a division of The Marcus Corp. (NYSE: MCS) in Milwaukee. Marcus is the seventh largest theatre circuit in the country and the leading chain in metro Milwaukee. Marcus owns or operates 594 screens at 49 locations in Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, Ohio, North Dakota and Iowa.

Do you think we should not back films if the terms aren't right?

What are your thoughts?

Guess I'm not sure why a theatre owner would ask that question. I know of very few who would take all films regardless of cost. Negotiating is part of a booker's job. It happens all the time. Markets differ, and you need to know what your community will support.

If you have a limited number of screens, it is entirely possible to determine that what you're currently playing will make you more money than you would if you displaced something in favor of a new, higher percentage film. In those cases it's entirely appropriate to decline, simply by saying you don't have any screens available. Then, as that new film goes somewhere else, you get to watch its performance and hope you made the right decision. In this world there's no guarantee you'll ever get THAT right, either!

That doesn't seem all that unusual.

Not unusual. I ran into that best week deal before with Paramount. Not often but it does happen.
