I for one have never really paid too much attention to box office figures for a movie. It's kind of a hobby for me. I go to see a movie and like to compare the gross to what I thought of the movie. It's surprising how it varies sometimes. I suppose that deciding what show in your theaters would be a reason to pay more attention to the gross figure of a movie. But I tend to take in the figures in the same way I listen to the critics. Am I missing the point here?

The gross is important. Even if we have not played a movie: gross receipts will and does indicate interest and buzz. A movie does not gross 150 million by being a sleeper. If it grosses well people will know about it. Conversely: if a picture, no matter how good, beautiful, and meaningful
has lousy grossing? When you play it...surprise!... it will also usually gross poorly. People talk, reviewers write, ads get seen, chat rooms ignite, etc. and a gross is born!
