The public has had its fill of war and politics (the new earlier first primaries are now less than 60 days away). The public is not about to pay money for a movie about either war or politics at this time (look at "Rendition").

Now along comes Tom Cruise attempting to revitalize UA. And the first offering from his new UA is both a war and political thriller : "Lions For Lambs".

With so much at stake the Lions publicists have belatedly pulled the advertising equivalent of a 'Hail Mary' play..... blanket with TV ads. This evening I must have seen at least 12 ads on different channels in a 90 minute time period for Lions. Haven't they learned? This sort of TV advertising deluge (aka lets attempt to buy a gross) hasn't worked since the wildernerness nature indies and Tom Laughlin pictures back in the early 70's.

Well at least the TV networks are making some money .... too bad the theatres won't.

I hope the buy us a gross approach works for Fred Claus!

I agree: Kingdom, Elah, Rendition: it needs to be in the rear view mirror before it goes wide.

No way on Lions, I'll pass. I also passed on Fred Claus. Another pic based on a theme that has been done to death over the last four years. Too early, badly cast, need I go on. IF anyone takes Fred I would like to know how they do with it.

rdetzler - What exactly are you planning on this holiday season? How many screens do you have? Pass on Fred Claus, Lions For Lambs, The Golden Compass.... Do you have more than a twin?

I think "Enchanted" looks run of the mill and is going to bomb!
Fred Claus will do good but should have opened Thanksgiving weekend. It may head the same fate of Santa Claus 3 by opening closer to Halloween than the real holiday.
People may want to hold off on Santa for the initial release and get it for matinees closer to the holiday!

we did well with Lions but i guess it helped that Tom Cruise was there! (sorry for gloating)

I think Enchanted will be big - though the most recent trailer didnt look as good...

Yeah just a twin here. Play the best, leave the rest. I am playing The Bee Movie, Mr Magoriums, Enchanted, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and National Treasure II.

Small market, I wouldnt know what to play if I had more screens. I leave it to the Regal up the street to play the R's, the horror flix, etc. I serve up family fare for the local neighborhoods. THey can walk here, they know everyone when they get here and I'm cheaper.
