License to Wed looks awful.

let me ask you this: do you have to open it on Wednesday or could you wait to Friday? How does that work with the studio of whatever is played the week before? Aren't you obligated to play the old movie on Wednesday and Thursday?

Sometimes the studios will let you open on Friday instead of Wednesday. Depends on what you had the week before, but we've finaled prints on Tuesday for a Wednesday opening. Once, we a booked 4 or 5 week old movie for only 5 days (Friday - Tuesday) so we would have room for a Wednesday opening.

So Transformers b.o. just dropped how much now? Too late for Paramount to move to August?

well, my tentative plan was to open Ratatouille, play for two weeks, and then go straight into Harry Potter. Now, I'm thinking of doing the same thing but having late shows on Wednesday and Thursday for HP and then go into the regular shows on friday. how does that sound?

It will work if BV allows you to split the last two days. And WB allows you to split the first two.

how do you all handle things like this? Does everyone have to get permission to split from two companies every time a movie opens on a day other then Friday? Seems horribly inefficient to me. What alternatives are there?

I have always asked. I think it is better to ask than to have them find out on their own and then penalize you by not letting you have any of their movies for six months or a year. I know of someone that happened to.

There are so many ways for them to find out. I know some studios receive my newsletter, I'm sure some read these very posts, they can call and listen to your answering machine, they can look at your website, or they can send a counter out to your theatre who then reports back that you split your screen. Whether they actually go to any of those measures is a crap shoot.

Did you receive Fox's letter this week addressing this issue?

yes, I got Fox's letter. I wouldn't try to pull the wool over their eyes. I'm basically a chicken at heart. But, to answer my question; does everyone get permission from two studios to open up a movie that comes out on a Wednesday? Do they usually say yes? What a screwy business I'm in.

I always ask permission. Especially if I am in the second week of the one I am replacing. 3rd 4th etc. weeks they may be a bit more lenient. It's the new one coming in that will raise the most objections. Point is we are trying to change our contract / booking terms. And that needs permission. Both companies want the prime time show times.

What do you think will play for the post holiday weekend until Harry opens (July 6-10)?

Pirates?
Surf's Up?
Ocean's 13?
