FYI The grandview Drive-in (Angola NY)has been unable to even open this season due to the property owners lack of interest in maintaining the property and repairing the screen that was damaged durring the past winter.

The man who leases it from him has been unable to open due to this, and has even been trying to get a contractor to repair the damage at his own expense (not so easy as the damage is over 60 feet up and requires a rather large steel patch)

I am trying to rally support to pressure the owners to do SOMETHING!

As well as have the town government get involved in saving this local landmark and attraction!

I would appreciate any emails from as many of you as possible showing your support and explaining that drive-in's ARE a valuable asset to a community as well as being a tourest attraction and NEEDS to be preserved!

We are working on a petition locally that I would like to include emails with that will be forwarded to the property owners as well as the government and news media ASAP!
www.grandviewdrivein.com (still pretty crude site but working on it)

Thanks!!!

Tony.

Tony: As you know, I was projectionist at the Grandview during college, from 1967 until I started my career at Kodak in 1970. So I have a personal interest in its fate.

At the time, Bob Reitler managed the drive-in, but the property was owned by the grocery store owner (Super-Duper Market). Ironically, I worked for current manager Larry's dad at the New Angola indoor theatre at the same time. I saw Larry at the Transit DI demo on May 17, and he did not mention this issue.

What kind of damage occurred to the screen? Sounds like one of the steel panels blew out. Does insurance cover it? Is a local contractor the best choice for work so high up, or might it best be done by a screen company? If the office/living space in the base of the tower is still rented and occupied, I assume the tenants will not want further deterioration in the structure above them? What was done years ago when one of the huge "Tragedy" mask burned on the front side of the tower? Not a good sign that the free-standing marquee was not replaced.

I assume the lease/contract with the property owner spells out who is responsible for what. Normally the tower structure is the responsibility of the property owner, but a maintenance item like painting the screen would be the manager/leasee. Might there be a "hidden" agenda of selling the property for development?

I still have limited ties to Angola (my sister lives there), and will try to lend my voice to those who think the Grandview Drive-In fills a need for family summer entertainment along the Lake Erie shore.

Good luck!

John,

At the time you saw larry, I doubt he thought there was going to be any real problems getting it fixed!

Several panels blew out, opening an 11'x5' hole aprox... THAT has prevented him from opening, but bigger worries are the total lack of interest by the property owners in ANYTHING to do with the drive-in, plus the fact we know they are interested in selling, but no one is talking at all...

This is why we need to rally support from everyone ASAP and inform all government agency's that we want it preserved!

There is a HUGE outcry from the public calling "chamber of Com. , Village and Town Halls, Myself, Indoor theatre etc... not to mention the drive-in's phone is getting hundreds of hits per day!

Clearly the PUBLIC wants it!

We need to have enough people to either pressure the current owners OR form a Non Profit and find a way to purchase it ourselves some how if need be.

Talk to ya soon...

Tony.

Tony, have you contacted the local TV news? This is an issue they would certainly LOVE to air and it is an excellent way to rally the public that may not know what's going on. It may even be picked up nationally. Also, with a little luck, someone with some pull or deep pockets may see it and want to get involved.

A PSA (Public Service Announcement) sent to the newspaper would also help. I can e-mail you an example of a properly formatted PSA if you would like.

As for the petition... try to create a form on your website that people can "sign".

The best of luck to you Tony... Drive-ins have to be saved!

If those lost panels are at the edges of the screen, it might be possible for the "show to go on" with a longer focal length lens and a smaller/brighter picture that doesn't fill the screen. Then you could make an announcement to the audience at each show, rallying their support to bring back the full sized image --- 42 x 100 feet if I remember correctly?

Who is the current owner? Are they an Angola business (i.e., do they still own the supermarket out front)?

unfortunatly it is in the center section, not possible to run with the hole...

The property owners own the whole lot, the Jubilee store, the Super Freeze (they run that) and the drive-in... Carbeck's (sp) own it.

When Bob Rietler was manager of the Grandview Drive-In, he also ran the Tastee-Freeze ice cream stand (what is was called back in 1970). For a while, he even ran an outdoor trampoline center next to the marquee (before the cost of liability insurance skyrocketed).

You might point out that a few missing panels are likely to make the screen much more susceptable to wind damage in the future, so repair soon will help avoid future damage.

I was out at the Grandview last week on my way to the local corn festival. The entire drive-in property had been staked out and surveyed. Not a good sign...

Sounds like the owners of the property are "cashing in" on its value for other development.

We know they are trying to sell, however not much is being said, one of the councelmen was going to have a meeting with them about this last week or early this week I understand to find out what they have in mind.

The patitions are going very well, and even the local governments are involved and ALL want to be sure it is saved!

Neither the building Dept. nor the planning Dept. have had ANY inquiries about the property for development and IF someone was planning to doze it and build something that would have been their 1st step I would think!

The only contacts made to those Depts. was info required when trying to sell property.

(and made BY the sellers not any other interested parties)

We are going public to the press hopfully next week and will see what we can find out!

NOBODY wants to see it gone, and I suspect we have enough support to stage a protest at the property and town halls if needed!

Thanks for all the support!

We are planning a public meeting saturday Sept. 9th and I am hoping to setup a power point show with before and after shots of other drive-in's that were lost to point out what COULD happen.

If any of you might have any pictures of sites after such as Trailer parks or whatever it would be most appreciated!

OR better yet anyone with extra time and knowledge of PP that cares to start me off with it, and I can finish it that would be nice, (I know that won't happen, I know you are ALL busy) I can dream can't I?

I am also looking for older pictures of the Grandview (John, if you have any from when YOU worked there let me know)

We have invited many political leaders whom I hope will show up now that they see we have a LOT of interest from the public.

Thanks!

Tony.

We were just informed on Wed. that Guess who, (Wally World) just now has approached the town officials to get approval to build a huge supercenter in the Grandview lot!

They have NOT purchased it yet, and we are gearing up to fight to have them find a 'better location' that won't close both an opperating Landmark Drive-in that the community wants saved, and our local Jubilee store that sits on the same property!

Not to mention the Rite-Aid store across the street that would probably fold within the 1st year etc... and sevaral small businesses such as the salon that is under the screen tower etc...

when taken into account the net job GAIN is nearly 0 and we are working on proving that as well as getting copies of studies that also prove this.

Wish us luck as we are also now in need of raising funds to pay for a Zoneing law attorney and traffic expert...
