It is true. We have been building this thing for about 4-5 months. The fully operational "on eBay!" is going. Check it out and please report. One thing I know: people are buying things from this list. We get a report and that is a fact. I hired a very-very affordable Indian company to do the programming. 1/10 the cost of quotes from local and Maine companies. They're good but lousy on the communication. As it is said: dots not feathers. I got quotes locally from web and software builders for this "on eBay" thing. Minimum was hige! And could not afford it. I did a search in google: cheap programming and got a guy in India as in the sub continent as in Bollywood. Hired a fellow who is quite good for about 1/5 of what I was quoted. So it is outsourced which conisdering how we outsend all of our movies to them is probably about equal. It's a novel experience for me and one which really illustrates what the web is doing. I have customers all over the world (another biz) and routinely now communicate with Europe/ China/India: it is really something.

I also went web programmer shopping about two years ago. I hired a NY firm to do custom programming for $22/hr (cheap) and come to find out, they outsource their work to India and simply put me in touch with their programmer in India... BAD choice! Not only are they in completely opposite time zones, so you miss a full day between e-mail responses, but I could rarely understand a word he said on the phone. E-mail communication was even worse. My site got really screwed up, so I hired a Seattle based firm who fixed everything and I'm still using even at almost 3X the cost. You get what you pay for in this area, please believe me. Pay the bucks for a good programmer. You may be paying by the hour, but if they're fast, you'll actually save money compared to someone who is slow and charges less. It also forces you to make changes yourself when you can to save money.

Aside from the comm gap and the delay of 11 hours difference the people did good work. We'll see if it is worth doing more with them. I found the greatest problem to be the talk and language gap: we use all kinds of idioms and slang and they just do not get it. Michael Hurley Impresario
