I'm not sure that there is one common link. True, many of the newbies who appear here clearly love film, and one could probably assume that anyone without a taste for film would look for another occupation. Still, I suspect from the tenor of the questions over the years that many seem to see the business as just easy profit: open the doors daily, turn on the projector and sit back and watch the money walk through the doors. If this site serves a good purpose --and it does!-- it is to disabuse those starry-eyed ones of the notions of ease and quick profits. If one has an hoteliers' instinct to want to provide a public house of service, he has a much more sound appreciation of the business and such may be his reason for entry to Exhibition since he loves being of service and the daily bustle of contact with the public.
For those who come with a love of film, it is obvious why they are here. For those like me who grew up with an awe of the huge palaces and even the dramatic atmosphere of a cinema multiplex, that may be the reason that we are drawn to the business.
The nost successful would-be exhibitors are those with a good business sense who like the daily variety of films and patrons, along with the mature balance to see that hard work is evidently involved, without any assurance of great profits.
For some it may be the smell of popcorn and food, the bright lights and the sometimes honky-tonk hubub and glitz of the lobby, but maybe they will be more sucessful with running a restaurant or a circus.
Such ones want an indoor job, but nothing like a sterile office.
And for those who simply inherited the cinema (rather like those befuddled souls in "The Smallest Show On Earth") it may just be that they are more or less their own boss, and the 'Romance' of film and theatres may have nothing to do with it.
To them all, I say Keep Reading Here, and Best Wishes! --Jim
