Anyone else out there running "Crouching Tiger" and having trouble with the sound? I have the rumble so bad in reel two that i have to crank down the subwoofers -- and people are still complaining. Reel 5 ain't so hot either. Just asked my booker to get new reels and was wondering if anyoen else was dealing with this in this movie? Thanks. Paul

Which soundtrack (analog or digital) are you playing? Is the rumble random, or is there a pattern to it? Is it throughout the reel, or only in quiet/loud passages?

Thanks for replying, John. I'm running an analog mono system. If i were to guess, the digital track is encroching into the analog. Throughout the second reel i was in the booth with the earphones on trying to adjust the exciter alignment. I walked to from one side where i could hear the sprocket holes to the other where i could hear the frame lines -- the rumble was still there. When it went to reel 3, the sound dissapperaed. It is a low to mid range rumble. sounds like a freight train in the back ground the sound person missed. very rythemic. most noticable during the quiet scenes and not too bad during the fight scenes. it pops in and leaves during the fifth reel, but not enough to send me to the booth and don the earphones. if it was throughout the the whoel show, i would suspect my system. But, it is completely abscent during the other reels. We just ran two weeks of "Chocolat" with no problems at all. Any ideas would be appreciated. Paul

I don't think it is interference from the digital track, since moving the scanned area side-to-side did not get rid of it. If the DTS track or Dolby perf area were being scanned, it would be a very distinct "motorboat" or ratta-tat-tat sound. (Don't forget to recheck your alignment with test films).

I suspect there may have been a problem with the soundtrack developer application, such that the silver level or width in the soundtrack was varying. (One reason the film industry wants to convert to silver-less soundtracks). I would ask for replacement reels, and describe the problem in detail so the lab can analyze it.

Avalon: Glad to hear the replacement reels fixed it.
I think my hypothesis about the soundtrack developer application was correct.

Nobody tells me anything. I'm talking with the projectionists a minute ago and they go... "That sound problem really sucks on Crouching." Problem was we had in a mono (sorry about that!) room and last night moved it into a stereo and POW! Rumble! Starts on reel 2. I'll call Tecnicolor.
