Even after 40 years in this business I'm still surprised at how some things turn out.

I believe that the last time I looked, "Star Wars Episode 3" had grossed over $377,000,000 while "Herbie, Fully Loaded" had done about $65,000,000.

Last week I played Star Wars while this week I'm playing Herbie, and Herbie is kicking the crap out of Darth Vader and his gang.

In fact the Friday opening of Herbie was my biggest Friday of the summer. I thought that Herbie would be a good film for my theatre, but not what it is doing, and didn't expect anything big from SW3, as those films have somewhat of a cult following that must see the flick as soon as it comes out first run. But to see a so so grossing film like Herbie do so much better then the top grossing film of the year, is quite a surprise.

Herbie is only the 2nd G rated film that I have played this year. I think there were only about 4 G rated films released this year. Besides doing excellent business, it is a real crowd pleaser as well. I have had many many people comment on the way out that they loved this film, along with the often heard remark: "why don't they make more movies like this?" I think the lack of family fare this summer was a big help for this picture.

I'm curious as to whether you generally find that your theatres follow the average national trends? If a film does big, do you do big, or if it goes bust nationally, do you die with it as well?

I find that I often do not follow the national trends.

Ditto on Herbie. It outplayed Star Wars, Batman, Mr & Mrs Smith and the Longest Yard. The only one I've played recently which outdid it is Madagascar..... National trends are only one indicator for me. We did really strong business with Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Monster In-Law and Because of Winn-Dixie for example.

Same here for our single screen. Herbie did about 100 people more then Star Wars and we played Star Wars during 4th of July weekend, which is a big and busy weekend for our little town.

I am a second run family neighborhood theatre similar to the Roxy. Normally we do relatively the same business with the same sort of pictures, And yet I did nothing(relatively speaking) with Herbie. My worst week of the summer.

Bottom line: know your audience, and the pictures they want to see. What flies in small town America may crash in the big city, and vice-versa. Don't forget the red state - blue state preference differences too when you book a Michael Moore picture.

Now that the week of Herbie has passed, I can report that it did even better then Madagascar, and several other pictures. In fact it became my 2nd highest grossing film for this year. It grossed almost $1,500 MORE then Star Wars 3.

Here are my top 10 for this year. Remember that I am subrun and some of these films that I played in January and early February came out last year and wouldn't be on most of your lists.

1. Meet the Fockers
2. Herbie, Fully loaded
3. The Incredibles
4. National Treasure
5. Madagascar
6. Monster in Law
7. Shall We Dance
8. Phantom of the Opera
9. The Pacifier
10. Star Wars 3

I opened Mr and Mrs Smith tonight, and I'm keeping Herbie only for matinees through the week. It looks as though it was a wise decision to keep Herbie for the matinees, because the Smiths didn't open that well tonight.
