I would like to open a movie theatre, but I don't know where to find contacts about where and who to get the films/movies from. I am aware of MGM, NLC etc... but it is impossible to speak to someone or get any information.

That is the only part of the business where I am stuck and unable to move forward...

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Very Simple.....Read the boards and subscribe to Box office magazine!

When starting out, it helps to employ a booking service. You may be able to learn enough in a year to do it on your own but they help when you are just starting out. If you are operating a theatre in a competitive zone then a booking service is essential. There is a list of booking services right on this website.

I have found the search feature on the board very helpful. Particularly if you limit it to one forum department. I struggled finding the right people to call too. It aint as easy as you might think.

As far as finding the film co's the best resources are the Film Journal and Box Office yearly directories and of course the NATO membership big butt book. Those three items will get you what you usually need for film companies.

Also: it's a small business. Most regional reps for the distribs know each other, have each others phone #, and will happily give it to you.

Smaller distribs: I search on biggie screen/ go their web site/ go to their head office/ or post it here and usually have the # I need in minutes.

My point to Monkey Gal was that finding where to get the movies is the last problem or consideration when thinking if you would like to build or open a theatre. The distribs like nothing more than having a place to show movies.
